A REAL-TIME WIND VISUALIZATION SYSTEM FOR THE HAVRE-FÉCAMP PORT
Since the wind is a determining factor in ship maneuvering, having access to real time and forecasted wind conditions is a huge advantage for captains and port operators both for economical and safety reasons.
In August 2018, the magazine Mer et Marine interviewed the president of the Havre-Fécamp pilots, Gilles Lanfranchi. He explained how every day harbor pilots deal with the wind efficiently, thanks to the wind visualization system provided by Meteodyn.
Combining meteorological forecasts and real time measurements, the application makes it possible to know precisely the wind speed and direction across the port area. It computes the wind up to 8 nautical miles offshore, on a scale of a few minutes and several hours. This facilitates the work of the 47 Le Havre pilots, who operate the largest ships in the world.
A TECHNOLOGY ALSO USED BY THE NANTES-ST NAZAIRE PORT
The Nantes-St Nazaire large seaport has been using the application developed by Meteodyn since 2010.
The television network France 3 presents this decision support application, on an interview of the harbor master’s office. Watch it here:
A VALUABLE SOFTWARE FOR ALL PORT OPERATORS
The real time decision supporting tool is also used by port operators and cargo handlers. Custom made, it allows hoist operators to plan their day according to the wind conditions, especially in the loading and unloading stages. With its mobile version, one can easily use it outdoors on a tablet or a smartphone.
