Offshore Wind & Metocean Measurement: Certified Data with DeepCLiDAR

The Challenges

 

  • My offshore site has no viable certified measurement solution

  • Fixed met masts can’t reach deep water and cost up to 10 times more than a floating system beyond 30 m depth. Without certified in-situ data, banks and technical advisors cannot validate the project.
  • My turbulence data is distorted by buoy motion

  • Movement induced by waves and currents introduces measurement error into turbulence intensity readings, undermining turbine fatigue load calculations and type selection.
  • Wind profiles alone don’t satisfy all my project requirements

  • Foundation design, turbine selection, and environmental permitting each require metocean data beyond wind, such as waves, currents, water quality… multiplying instruments, costs, and delays.

Our solution

DeepCLiDAR is a modular, hurricane-resistant floating LiDAR buoy. It is deployable in any water depth, from shallow coastal sites to locations exceeding 1,000 m, without bathymetry constraints. Carbon Trust certified, its data is accepted by lenders as primary financing evidence.

Wind speed, direction, and turbulence are measured by a ZX 300M LiDAR sensor at up to 12 levels from 19 m to 300 m. Turbulence intensity readings are then corrected post-campaign by CLS teams, using a validated motion-compensation methodology to offset the buoy’s wave-induced movement, at no additional cost.

Integrated wave, current, and water quality sensors capture full metocean conditions in a single deployment, eliminating the need for separate instrumentation.

  • Carbon Trust certified, independently reviewed by DNV at best practice level, and compliant with IEA Wind TCP Task 32 RP18 and RP33.
  • Built and maintained by CLS, with service hubs on five continents for rapid mobilization and responsive on-site support.

Wind Resource Assessment:

  • Wind profiles across up to 12 levels (19 m to 300 m)
  • 1-second and 10-minute averaged wind statistics
  • Wind shear and directional veer analysis
  • Motion-corrected turbulence intensity, included as standard

Metocean Characterization:

  • Wave height and period
  • Current profiles
  • Seawater temperature and salinity
  • Turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and acidity
  • Additional parameters on request
